Cal-EZ FAQs

Why choose a powder?

Why choose a calcium powder?

It is well established that many people have difficulty swallowing pills. A 2003 Harris survey found that four out of 10 Americans have experienced difficulty when swallowing pills, with the number rising to 51% among women. A 2002 Gallup study found that 50% of consumers who didn't take vitamins or supplements said the reason was tablet size. Cal-EZ solves this problem by mixing easily into any beverage or soft food.

How do I take Cal-EZ?

Just stir one packet into your coffee, tea or favorite beverage until fully dispersed. Swirl the last bit of beverage to re-disperse any Cal-EZ that settles out. You may also mix Cal-EZ into soft foods like cereal, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes or pasta.

Can the daily dose of Cal-EZ be divided over several meals? (how to optimize calcium absorption)

Absolutely! To optimize absorption of calcium, you can divide the 1000 mg daily amount into two doses by taking a half-packet of Cal-EZ at a time. The top of the packet can be folded closed and will maintain full potency for several days. Most people, however, take all their daily vitamins in one sitting. Realizing this fact, the National Osteoporosis Foundation states that "Calcium, whether from diet or supplements, is best absorbed when taken in amounts of 500-600 mg or less. Taking your calcium all at once, however, is better than not taking it at all." Moreover, the fact that Cal-EZ is in a powder form should result in improved absorption as compared to tablets or pills that must first be broken down in the stomach.

Why does Cal-EZ use calcium carbonate vs. other forms of calcium, like calcium citrate or gluconate?

Calcium carbonate is the most studied form of calcium and has been proven beneficial in more scientific studies than any other form of calcium. Additionally, at 40% elemental calcium, it has the highest concentration of calcium of any available form - almost twice as much as in calcium citrate. The following chart illustrates the comparable amounts of elemental calcium in several types of calcium supplements.

The use of calcium carbonate in Cal-EZ enables you to get the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of calcium in the smallest possible dose, in contrast to the large horse pills or multiple chalky tablets required for products using other, less concentrated calcium forms.

How does the body's ability to absorb the calcium carbonate in Cal-EZ compare to absorption of calcium citrate?

Cal-EZ is a tasteless, grit-free powder that needs to be mixed into any beverage or soft food. Several clinical studies have confirmed that, when taken with food, calcium carbonate and calcium citrate are absorbed equally well and have equal bioavailability.

Why does Cal-EZ contain 1000 i.u. of Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D is necessary for effective absorption of calcium. It helps deposit calcium in bones and teeth, helps maintain adequate blood levels of calcium and phosphorus and plays a key role in supporting the immune system. The Vitamin D in Cal-EZ – Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) – is easily converted into the most potent and active form of Vitamin D in the human body. While 400 i.u. has been the usual daily dose of Vitamin D, recently completed studies indicate that higher levels can help lower the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and many types of cancer, as well as help regulate blood pressure, improve muscle pain and weakness and ease the symptoms of PMS and psoriasis. Daily Vitamin D doses up to 2000 i.u. are completely safe.

Why does some of the Cal-EZ powder settle to the bottom of the glass or cup?

Cal-EZ is formulated as a very fine, grit-free powder. While calcium is a mineral that will not dissolve in most beverages, the Cal-EZ powder disperses so easily into beverages or soft foods that you might actually think it has dissolved! But if the glass, cup or bowl is left standing for a period of time, some of the powder will settle to the bottom. This is totally natural. For this reason, simply stir or swirl your beverage occasionally to re-disperse the powder. This is especially important prior to the final swallow.

A recommended use is to mix Cal-EZ into a juice product, such as orange juice. This is because there is acid present in most juices, including orange juice. The calcium will interact with the acid and help neutralize it, while the acid will dissolve much of the calcium. Plus, the carbonate in the Cal-EZ powder will produce a mild "fizz." This process will transform the juice into a low-acid, lightly carbonated beverage that is easy on your stomach, while minimizing any settling of the powder to the bottom of the glass. Mixing Cal-EZ into soft foods will also result in little, if any, settling.
